On their first Friday match of the season, the Boston Breakers hosted the Portland Thorns in a match that Boston probably should have won. Instead, another late goal brought the Thorns level after Nadia Nadim had converted a penalty kick to bring her team back to within a goal of the Breakers. Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead on quality goals by Natasha Dowie and Rosie White (White's first NWSL goal), but couldn't hang on for the win after the half.
All but one of Boston's home games have been unusually windy affairs this season, and the swirling breezes were back on Friday. After being thoroughly dominated in the midfield in the first half, Portland came back from the break with a new strategy: long passes forward from the back line. Together with the winds, the tactic resulted in a slightly unpredictable pass trajectory. But, if you try something enough times, it's bound to work at least once. Finally, one of the long passes came down to Nadim inside the box, and she was able to slip it past Abby Smith.
The two teams face off again on Saturday in Portland.
Normally, our postgame mixed zone has been indoors. But for this match, we were outside in the wind. Unfortunately, this has resulted in some crap quality in the postgame videos this week. You'll hear the wind, and you'll see my lenses trying to make sense of a flapping backdrop. Hopefully you'll agree it's better than nothing.
